What Are Benchmarks?

Benchmarks in Vizzle are standards-aligned assessments administered three times per year (at the beginning, middle, and end) to monitor student progress and inform instructional planning. This article walks you through what Benchmarks are, how to find them, assign them, and use the data they generate.

Vizzle Benchmarks are 30-question, grade-level assessments aligned to state standards and extended standards. They measure mastery across core high school courses and automatically collect data to help guide instructional decisions.

Best Practices

To ensure reliable data:

✔ Assign the correct Benchmark level at the start of the year
✔ Give students up to a week to complete
✔ Reassign or date-update for MOY and EOY for continuous tracking
✔ Close end-of-lesson celebrations to ensure the assessment is marked complete
✔ Review summaries before reteaching or grouping

How Students Complete Benchmarks

Option 1: Student Login - with their account

Students can complete Benchmarks through their student login, where:

  • Progress automatically saves and picks up where they have left off.

  • Assessments may span multiple days.

  • The system tracks mastery each assessment overtime.

Option 2: Teacher Login - launching from the student's activity tab

Go to the Student Activities Tab

  1. Log into Vizzle Teacher View

  2. Select a student

  3. Open the Activities tab

  4. Filter by subject

  5. Search: Benchmark

  6. Have the student play the activity from beginning to end to capture data

*Note: It will not save the student's place in the activity if they exit before it is completed from this view. It will start over when it is launched again. Run from the Student Login to save the student's place and restart it from where they left off.

Reassign or Update Benchmark for MOY and EOY Assessment

Option A — Update the Existing Assignment

  1. Go to Previously Assigned Activities

  2. Search by Subject, and add a keyword or "Benchmark" to find activity
  3. Select the lesson and click edit

  4. Adjust the date range

  5. Benchmark reappears in the student’s folder

Option B — Reassign the Benchmark

  • Simply assign it again

  • All data stays connected on the same tracking card

  • This allows for editing the student groups more easily

Differentiated Delivery Options

Benchmarks include flexible formats:

Interactive Version

  • Accessible through student or teacher launch

  • Student's launch saves progress

  • Teacher's launch saves data if the lesson is completed in one sitting.

Print Version

For students needing hands-on support:

  • One test item per page

  • Students may circle, tap, or manipulate answers

  • Teachers may support verbally or physically

  • Cards may be cut for communication-based responding

  • An observational scoring card can be printed for manual data collection
