Media - How do I download a YouTube video for a VizZle lesson?

Teachers often like to include videos they've found on YouTube (and other video sharing sites) in their lessons for reinforcement or rewards. Before a YouTube video can be imported into VizZle, you first need to save it to your computer using a download application.

There are several free online download applications that can do the trick. Here are a few we recommend:

Note: For Mac users, we've had success installing YTD Video Downloader (

All these applications work in much the same way, so for this tutorial we'll go through the process of downloading a YouTube video using Here are the steps:

  • First, find the YouTube video you want to download. In the URL bar, use your mouse to highlight the entire website address and copy it. (To copy press Control+C for PC users, or Command+C for Mac users.)
  • Open another browser tab/window, and go to the video download site.
  • In the URL Download box, paste the YouTube link you had just copied. (Paste the link by pressing Control+V for PC users, or Command+V for Mac users.)
  • After you've pasted the YouTube link, click Download.
  • will process your request and present you with several file download options.
  • There are two things to look for before selecting which video file to download:
    • VizZle accepts FLV, 3GP, MP4, and MOV video files. (The preferred file type for VizZle is FLV.)
    • The maximum file size you can import into VizZle is 25MB. The higher the quality of the video, the larger the file will be.
  • Once you've identified the video file type and size that suits your needs, click the file icon.
  • The file should start downloading to your computer. (If your browser prompts you to open or save the file, select Save.)
  • When the download is complete, you can now import that video file into VizZle. To learn how to import a video file into VizZle, please read the article here.
